SatireSatire is usually meant to be funny. Its purpose is often not so much humor for its own sake as an attack on something strongly disapproved by the satirist, using the weapon of wit. It is related to irony and mocking. In the piece "The the impotence of proofreading" by Taylor Mali what is being satirized is the use of spell check. He is making fun of people who rely on spell check to make their work seem flawless when in reality spell check can screw over at times. The way he is making fun of spell check is by using spell check in the wrong way and showing how bad the mistakes spell check can make. He is trying to get the point across that people need to start actually proof reading their work and get the correct spelling of the word they are using. In the article "Children Of All Ages Delighted By Enslavement Of Topsy The Elephant" from the Onion, is showing and explaining how this supposed happy elephant is being treated and how people actually believe the elephant is happy. The mistreated elephant is forced to do cruel tricks. For example, making the elephant stand on his hind legs, an unnatural and excruciatingly painful movement that stresses and permanently damages the 8,000-pound elephant's joints. The elephant is also hit with a hook rod so that the elephant would pick up his leg and trunk to simulate that he is waving to the crowed.
