IronyIrony is the term used to explain a conflict of facts where what is expected and what actually happens. I have experienced irony in my life and it is usually never a great feeling. For example, I had this friend in middle school and he was have a great day. He was getting all his test scores back from all the teachers and he was happy he passed with good scores because he usually never got high scores on his tests. As the day goes on people were telling him he was having too good of a day. A little while later his finger was caught between two desks a sliced open. He had to go to the hospital after the great day he was having. Worst part is, that it was my fault his finger sliced open. I accidentally slammed the desks together while his finger was in the way. The poem "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson is ironic. Richard Cory was who everyone wanted to be. People admired him. In the poem he is spoken about as if he were royalty. For example, "He was a gentlemen from sole to crown, clean favored, and imperially slim." A simple nobody would not be described with such king like words. "He was rich - yes richer then a king", this line from the poem shows that he thought as being wealthier then even a king. The last line of this poem was the shocking one. "And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, went home and put a bullet through his head", he had everything but seems he was unhappy and wasn't a great guy. I read the short story "Lamb to the Slaughter" and the irony is this story is intense. Mary Maloney which is the main character is the story is really disturbing. Her husband gets home and she is being real nice to him and he just seems to be having an off day. He is slowly telling her he is leaving her, so she hits him over the head with a frozen piece of lamb, which she puts in the oven to cook. Steps out and goes to the store to get vegetables and use the grocery clerk as an alibi. Later gets home to put on the fake act that she found her husband dead and calls the cops. The cops are going out of their mind looking for a club type object. Mary Maloney offers them the lamb that's in the oven and the cops never realize that they are actually eating the weapon used to kill her husband. The irony in the article "The House That Slaves Built" by Gardiner Harris is very strong. The White House was built by a crew of black laborers. The presidents that lived in the White House were slave owners. The last President that was a slave owner was Zachary Taylor who died in 1850 which was only 160 years ago. The house built by blacks for a white presidents is now home to Barrack Obama and his family. This shows a lot of change in America and the irony of a black family living in The White House built by slaves and where blacks were not allowed. The irony in this cartoon is really funny. It is comparing our economic down fall to the times in which there where slaves. It is showing how slaves didn't have to worry about getting laid off, but in the times we are in now everyone is getting laid off from their jobs. So basically it is saying slaves had their jobs for life and we don't. Irony is used to explain a situation where you expect one this to happen and the unexpected happens. For example, in the poem "Richard Cory", he is thought of as a king and yet puts a bullet through his head. This is explaining how someone with such class and wealth is miserable enough to kill himself. In the short story "Lamb To The Slaughter", the wife Mary kills her husband because he is leaving her. She uses a frozen piece of lamb which later she feeds to the detectives who are looking for a weapon used to kill her husband. Last but not least, the irony behind the article "The House That Slaves Built". The House built by slaves where blacks were not allowed is now home to Barrack Obama and his family, which are Black. In conclusion, irony is every where even in my life.
