The FightThe passage “The Fight” was a rather interesting story talking about a young boy going to a new school and the problems he faced. He faced a problem most people tend to come to at certain points in their lifetime, being the new kid on the block, which in this case the block is a new school. A few examples of the problems he face were that he was the new kid in the school, he didn’t know anyone, he didn’t know if the boys in school were tough and liked to fight, which ended up in him fighting. For the boy in this passage, which was the narrator, the day started off good with no problems. He was doing his work feeling confident that he could keep up with the lessons given in class. He was very nervous about the boys in school thou. He didn’t know if they were troublemakers or bullies and liked to fight and for that matter how hard they fought. Recess comes along and he is on the school grounds when a group of boys walk up to him and start asking him questions. For example, one of the boys says to him “Where you from?” the narrator responds “ Jackson” so then the boy says to the narrator “How come they make people in Jackson so ugly”. The narrator counters with a remark of his own and this starts an argument between the two boys. People started gathering around watching them trying to get a fight going between the two boys. The crowd was getting big and because of it there was a lot of crowding around the two boys, which ended up in them bumping and pushing into each other. The narrator took the first swing and from there the two boys started going at it. The narrator wasn’t giving up and was trying as hard as he could to make an impression on the students watching the fight. The fight ended and there wasn’t a clear winner. When the narrator got to class, students started asking him questions wanting to know more about him. On his way home that day he found a ring, which he kept in case he needed to fight again. This fight was more then just a fight to the narrator; it was a right of passage into this new school. He knew he had to make a name for him self or everyday he would be bullied and made fun of. His actions could be viewed as wrong but I agree with his choice to stand up for himself. He knew he couldn’t back down. If I were in the narrators place I would have done exactly the same thing. I believe he was right. I have had a similar encounter the narrator had in this passage. I did what I thought was right that was to stand up for myself. In conclusion, the narrator’s actions might have seemed improper but at times the best choice isn’t always the right one.
