Deadend

Deadend

In the passage “Dead End” there were difficult choices to make dealing with personal desire and promises made. In this passage the main characters are Maria and Frankie Galvan. The passage takes place in a few different places like her school and near a bridge. It is about Maria having a crush on a boy named Frankie and because of this crush and desires she has, there is a choice whether or not to go along with all the partying all the girls in school do or keep into her studies.

Maria is a smart girl that’s a senior in high school that’s does all her work and gets straight A’s. She secretly envies this gang of girls that only party, drink, and get into the back seat of guys cars. She made a promise to her mother to stay in school and get an education. Maria has to take care of her siblings because her father is never around after her mother passed away. Maria is very lonely and doesn’t have anyone to talk to about her problems or give her advice. She has no one to whom she can relate her feelings too. She has a big problem in the story because she wants to be able to do what she wants but does not want to break her promise. She feels a promise to her mother is more important then her personal desire. Towards the end of the story she starts telling Frankie about a story she heard about “La LLorona”, and she tells Frankie how she doesn’t want to end up like her.
